(Range Card)
YTR Echo Mike

Infantry's Best Friend - Hand-Drawn Range Card Guide
Filling a gap from last year's basic patrol techniques article - the Range Card that was mentioned but not detailed.
What is a Range Card?
A Range Card is a standardized chart used to record a shooter's or machine gunner's sector of fire, target positions, range data, and other relevant information.
When to Use Range Cards?
According to YTR Echo Mike's video explanation: If you and your squad need to stay in a specific position for more than 30 minutes, you should create a range card for that area. This not only improves your distance estimation efficiency during firefights but also makes handovers with teammates and colleagues safer and smoother during position changes.
Creating Your Range Card?
You can use any blank paper to hand-draw one, but Mike recommends searching online for the A5517 US military standard form, filling it out digitally, then laminating it so you can reuse and modify it with markers.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Define Arc Intervals
The simplest method Mike suggests is to select a major terrain feature or reference building directly in front of you, estimate the distance, then divide by the number of arc intervals.
Example: If you estimate the farthest building is about 450 meters away, divide 450 by 9 to get approximately 50-meter intervals.
US Military Standard:
If main terrain is within 450 meters: set each interval at 50 meters
If over 451 meters: set each interval at 100 meters
Step 2: Fill in Position and Weapon Information
In the lower information section's upper-left field, enter: Unit position
Weapon being used (complete model designation - e.g., M249 SPW, not just M249)
Then fill in unit information in the upper section and confirm magnetic north direction.
Step 3: Draw Central Reference Line
Draw a straight line directly forward from your facing direction. In Mike's video example, magnetic north is set as the front direction (0-degree line), but normally you should mark the actual azimuth.
Step 4: Begin Sketching
Assess the approximate distances of observed terrain and landscape features, as well as their angles relative to the reference line. Draw these on the semicircular diagram and mark the azimuths. After completing the sketch, list the information in the table below according to the fields.
Important Notes
"No photos, no GPS marking" - Mike emphasizes at the end of his video that observing with the naked eye makes it easier to develop environmental awareness and forces you to think about potential enemy approach directions and your possible response measures.
Editor's Notes
Range card drawing methods vary significantly depending on nationality, military branch, and time period - you'll find many different methods online.
For machine gun positions, sniper observation posts, or even Javelin missile range cards, you may need more in-depth study (such as setting primary/secondary defensive zones, drawing dead space, marking direct/indirect fire weapon ranges, etc.). However, Echo Mike's video provides a very simple and quick drawing method for general infantry and reserve personnel.
